Cultural Diversity Week - Mt Ridley Primary

Earlier this term, the Primary school students took part in Cultural Diversity Week. This was a way for us to embrace all of the different cultures we have not only within our school community, but Victoria as a whole. We started off the week with Harmony Day, where students were given the opportunity to dress in a traditional outfit from their own culture, or dress in the colour orange. The students looked fantastic!

We had three incursions throughout the week that students got to take part in as well. Our Preps, Years 1 and 2 students all got to meet Rosa, who taught them the traditional Italian dance called the Tarantella. Our Years 3 and 4 got to meet Simon and Freddy who showed them how to play the African drums – and wow did they sound amazing! There was so much excitement and energy in the room which was great to see. Our Years 5 and 6 participated in a Bollywood dancing incursion which was led by Nildhara. It was lovely to see the students learning something new, whilst others were reinforcing what they have grown up with through their own heritage.

We had some delicious treats for the students as well. On Tuesday they enjoyed a slice of traditional margherita pizza, and on Thursday the gelato van came by with chocolate, vanilla and candy flavours. To say the students were excited for this is an understatement! It was fantastic to see so much participation from the students and staff and we look forward to continuing our cultural awareness over the course of the year at Hume Anglican Grammar.
