Bill Sweeney

Bill Sweeney 
Principal

Bill joined Hume Anglican Grammar in 2013, in the sixth year of the school. Originally from South Australia, his previous roles included seven years as the Director of Teaching and Learning at St Peter’s College, and Head of Technology as well as Staffing & Timetable Coordinator at Prince Alfred College, both in Adelaide.  

Bill’s experience and passion for the development of young people is a perfect fit for the culture of excellence at Hume. He believes in an inclusive community where children are provided a nurturing environment allowing inner talents to be discovered and enhanced. With a focus on education of the ‘whole child’, Hume Anglican Grammar has become the school of choice in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.    
 
Bill completed his Diploma of Teaching and Bachelor of Education at the South Australian College of Advanced Education (now the University of South Australia), and his Master of Education (Management & Leadership) and Master of Business Administration at the University of Adelaide. 

Penelope Monger

Penelope Monger
Deputy Principal

Following careers in media and communications, Penelope entered the teaching profession in 2010. After nine years at Gippsland Grammar in Sale, including seven as the Head of English, Penelope joined Hume Anglican Grammar in 2019 as the Assistant Principal – Secondary, and was appointed Deputy Principal mid-2021.

With a passion for promoting and sustaining student wellbeing, Penelope takes a great interest in ensuring that students are emotionally, intellectually and physically cared for, in order to maximise their opportunities for educational success. She is also keenly interested in the idea of collective efficacy and is delighted to be a part of Hume’s dynamic teaching and learning culture, with its focus on the pursuit of excellence due to collaborative, collegial and respectful relationships.

Penelope holds a Bachelor of Arts (Swinburne University), Bachelor of Broadcasting (Edith Cowan University), Diploma of Education (University of Melbourne), Graduate Diploma in Librarianship (Charles Sturt University), and Master of Educational Leadership (University of Newcastle). 

Kieran Mitchell

Kieran Mitchell
Business Manager

Kieran joined as Business Manager and Company Secretary of Hume Anglican Grammar in 2016 and is a Chartered Accountant with over 20 years’ experience. Prior to Hume, he has worked with Big 4 accounting firms Ernst & Young and Deloitte, assisting fast-growing businesses, as well as Macquarie Bank in London.

Kieran’s strong accounting and business background ensures effective financial management on a day-to-day basis, and that future growth and development of the school is carried out in a financially sustainable manner. Under Kieran’s stewardship, the School has seen considerable development of its physical resources, greatly enhancing the educational journey for the students.  

Kieran holds a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) from the RMIT and is a Chartered Accountant. He and his wife are residents of the local community, with their four eldest of five children, currently students at Hume.  

Helen Lucas 
Head of Campus (Donnybrook)

Helen joined Hume Anglican Grammar in 2025 as the Head of Campus (Donnybrook). Prior to Hume, she served as the Director of Curriculum at Eltham College for five years. She was instrumental in advancing Eltham’s approach to teaching and learning.  

Before this appointment, Helen held several senior roles overseas, including Deputy Principal and International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD), Coordinator at Eastern Mediterranean International School in Israel for five years, the IBD Extended Essay Coordinator at the Anglican International School in Jerusalem, as well as teaching and leading at schools in New York, USA; Helsinki, Finland; and St Petersburg, Russia. Helen also served in a number of Australian schools, notably as the Head of Humanities at The Friends’ School, Hobart for six years and three government schools in Queensland.

Helen holds a Bachelor of Arts (History & Literature) and Diploma of Education from the University of Queensland. 

Kristen Smith

Kristen Smith
Head of Campus (Kalkallo)

Kristen joined Hume Anglican Grammar in 2022 as Assistant Principal – Primary (Kalkallo) before taking on the role of Head of Campus (Kalkallo) in 2025. With more than 30 years’ experience in education, Kristen has taught in a variety of independent schools across Melbourne. including as Head of Junior School at Beaconhills College for four years, and College Head of the Primary Years Program at Wesley College for 13 years.  

Kristen completed her Diploma of Teaching at Victoria College, followed by a Bachelor of Education, Post Graduate Certificate of Gifted Education and Master of Education (Gifted Education) at Monash University. She is also an experienced International Baccalaureate workshop leader and site visitor having delivered professional development to educators in schools in the Asia Pacific region.

Kristen is passionate about implementing best practices in teaching and learning, and building supportive and safe environments where students thrive. She is committed to successful home school partnerships where all work together with the same goals in mind. 

Luke Friend

Luke Friend
Head of Campus (Freier)

Luke Joined Hume Anglican Grammar in 2016 as the Assistant Principal – Primary (Mt Ridley) before taking on the role of Head of Campus (Freier) in 2025. Prior to Hume, Luke was the Head of Junior School at Wesley College, Melbourne, where he taught for 20 years.  

Luke completed his Diploma of Teaching and Bachelor of Education at Victoria University and has been a member of the Independent Primary School Heads of Australia  for 11 years.

Holding a Bachelor of Education and Diploma of Teaching, Luke has a wealth of experience in Primary Education and a steadfast commitment to building school community. The partnership between home and school and developing an inclusive and respectful culture continue to flourish under Luke’s leadership. 

Naomi White
Director of Student Wellbeing

Naomi joined Hume Anglican Grammar in 2025 in the role of Director of Student Wellbeing. Prior to Hume, Naomi held a variety of wellbeing roles, including Head of Student Wellbeing Programs (P-12) and Head of House at Westbourne Grammar, and House Coordinator and Digital Wellbeing Project Leader at Mentone Grammar.

Before education, she worked in a number of industries, including IT, Performing Arts as an actor, and the Health and Wellbeing industry as a yoga instructor. Naomi considers herself to be a lifelong learning with a passion for student wellbeing, which has driven her career trajectory towards pastoral care roles as well as her work in ensuring that Hume’s wellbeing program is responsive to the evolving needs of students in today’s world.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Teaching (Secondary), and is completing a Master of Adolescent Health and Wellbeing, all from the University of Melbourne.

Sam Butterfield
Director of Teaching and Learning

Sam joined Hume Anglican Grammar in 2023 in the role of Director of Teaching and Learning. Prior to moving to Australia, Sam held numerous leadership roles in schools across the United Kingdom.  

Sam’s educational experience extends beyond the immediate school setting and has seen him co-found a teacher training social enterprise, the ‘Limited Resource Teacher Training’ course (recently rebranded as ‘Inspiring Teachers’). This is an in-service professional learning program supporting teachers in a dozen developing nations. From its original group of three, within six years the enterprise grew to a multimillion-dollar venture with several permanent staff.  

Sam holds a Master of Educational Leadership from Manchester University, a Post Graduate Certificate of Education from Sheffield Hallam University and a Bachelor of Arts – Politics and Philosophy, from York University. His main teaching areas are English and Economics.

Libby Hasler
Director of Human Resources

Libby joined Hume Anglican Grammar in 2023 in the role of Director of Human Resources bringing expertise spanning over 20 years in key human resource leadership roles. Prior to joining Hume, Libby's experience included General Manager, People and Culture at the Australian Institute of Architects and General Manager, People and Culture at Western Water.

Libby's extensive leadership experience in diverse industries from health to banking, and from private to public and not-for-profit sectors, has equipped her with a diverse skill set. She is passionate about developing strong cultures and leadership capabilities, implementing effective employee value propositions, managing talent and succession planning, and fostering positive employee and industrial relations. Additionally, she has a deep understanding of organisational design and change management, and is skilled in recruitment, remuneration and benefits, performance management, coaching, and more.

Libby holds a Master of Business (Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations) from RMIT where her thesis topic centred on performance management. A Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations with Distinction, also from RMIT and a Bachelor of Business (Major in Human Resources Management) from Deakin University.
