Hands On Science - Year 2 Mt Ridley

Year 2 students put their skills to the test as Hands On Science visited Hume Anglican Grammar on Monday, February 14 to showcase the ‘Materials and Mixing’ incursion which served as a fantastic learning opportunity.

The current unit of inquiry which, among other things, sees the students observe and explore how materials in our everyday lives can be mixed for new purposes. Under the guidance from the Hands On Science team, students enthusiastically created imitation snow, investigated the properties of liquids and kinetic sand and explored how magnets have the ability to separate materials, such as extracting iron and other metals from sand. This allowed the students to view how these reactions occur and allowed them to experience how elements in natural environment can be transformed and mixed for interesting and useful purposes.

The Year 2 team look forward to more enriching and engaging opportunities for inquiry learning in the remainder of the year. It was a great opportunity for the students to start the year in a hands-on manner with concrete materials as we come to the end of our first inquiry cycle of 2022.
