Year 5 at Sovereign Hill - Mt Ridley

Term 3 started on an optimistic note with our Year 5 students looking forward to their Inquiry Unit on Colonial History. The unit commenced with some prelude activities leading up to our Year 5 camp to Sovereign Hill, Ballarat.

On the 18 July, our Year 5 cohort enthusiastically boarded the buses to Ballarat. We started off by engaging in educational activities at the Eureka Centre followed by the Art Gallery. At the main campsite at Sovereign Hill, students participated in AURA 3D show, which was reminiscent of the struggle between the miners and troopers in the 18th Century and culminated in the Eureka Stockade.

The highlight of our visit to Sovereign Hill was the costume school experience. Students attended school in the 1850s, dressed appropriately for that era. They reflected on what life was like for students of that time where children were ‘seen but not heard’. They eagerly participated in writing with ink pens, sewing, playing old fashioned games and many more educational activities.

Other interesting activities the students engaged in included Red Hill Mine tour, Gold Pour demonstration, gold panning and of course shopping. The favourite purchases were candles, soaps, raspberry drops and other types of candy. The Year 5 camp proved to be one with many noteworthy experiences for all students and staff to cherish.

We would like to express our gratitude to our parents for their continued support throughout this year and look forward to another action-packed semester for our Year 5 students.
