Reflection and Standards

I hope students and families had a relaxing and enjoyable break. It was great to welcome students back last week. Having worked for part of the break, I always feel a sense of joy in how students bring a school to life – it is not really a school without them. At the end of last term, I wrote that students should take some time over the holidays to reflect on Semester 1 and to set themselves some goals for the second half of the year. I trust that this has occurred and that their focus is geared towards achieving their personal best.

Over the break I took some time to reflect on my first semester here at Hume. Starting somewhere new is never easy, but I have been extremely well supported by my colleagues, students and families. Hume is a wonderful community, and it has been a privilege to witness all our students have achieved this year.

At the end of last term, standards were put on the agenda and in the first week of term we held an assembly to reinforce some messages about our standards and expectations. Mr Sweeney, the School Captains and I all touched on various areas for improvement, acknowledging that many of our students consistently meet these expectations. I emphasised students being focussed and valuing learning time. Things including punctuality, coming prepared to classes with all materials and having an attitude that every minute of learning counts are essential as students progress through their Secondary journey.
