Police Visit - Prep Kalkallo

This term, Prep students are learning all about our local community. We are investigating the important people and places that provide us with the things we need, to be happy, health and safe citizens. As part of our learning, we invited two police officers to visit and share some information about their role in supporting the community.

Before the visit, the students shared their current knowledge and devised questions to find out new information. Amongst other things, they were curious to know why police have badges and how police dogs can smell. It was great to see the student’s understanding shift from ‘Police catch bad guys’ to ‘Police help the community in many different ways.’

We learnt about the police departments, including the search and rescue unit, dog squad, air wing and water police. The students were fascinated with the different aspects of the police uniform, including the vest and walkie-talkie. We also had the opportunity to sit in a police car and hear the siren sound.

In the coming weeks, we look forward to expanding our understanding of the many different people and skills required for a community to work effectively. I’m sure the students will be able to come up with some great suggestions about the facilities and services they would like to see in the growing community of Kalkallo.
