IPICK Reading! - Mt Ridley

Reading research shows that students who read for interest, pleasure and make their own choices about what to read achieve more success at school, which means the more children fall in love with reading, the better their academic outcomes.

With this in mind, all three Primary campuses introduced the IPICK Reading Program at the beginning of Term 1. This strategy builds students’ ability to stay immersed in text and to improve comprehension. It also teaches students how to read and how to read independently.

The IPICK strategy stands for:

I choose my book

Purpose: Why am I choosing a book today?

Interest: What are the things that I like or want to learn about?

Comprehend: Do I understand what’s going on by reading the words and pictures?

Know: Do I know enough words to understand what’s going on?

Teachers have implemented this program into their daily timetables with students reading every day for varied amounts with the aim to build up and develop reading stamina.

What is reading stamina?

Reading stamina is the reading equivalent to physical fitness. It’s the stamina students need to read for extended periods of time and can be developed with practice. How long children are able to read depends on their age, their access to books that interest them and their experience with reading. There is no absolute number of minutes, but experts suggest that by the middle to the end of the year, Prep students should be able to read for up to 15 minutes, Year 1 students up to 20 minutes and Year 2 students up to 25 minutes and so on.

The more stamina children have while reading, the more success they will have as readers.

Our goal for Term 2 is to begin reading conferences and goal setting with students during IPICK sessions.

The joys of being a lifelong reader awaits! We are looking forward to being part of our student’s journey.
