Stay Calm and Carry On

Some may be aware, Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) are an organisation that support non-government education for the benefit of students and the wider community. They advocate on behalf of members and promote the importance of independent education. Hume Anglican Grammar is a member of this association.

One of the many services they provide are resources and information for parents, this may be found on The Parents Website https://theparentswebsite.com.au/ Its purpose is to provide a selection of news, features and resources for parents on raising and educating children.

One of the regular columnists is Andrew Fuller, the renowned adolescent psychologist and author. As we approach the ‘business end’ of the VCE year and with last night’s parent teacher interviews, I thought it appropriate to refer to an article by Andrew entitled ‘Stay Calm and Carry On. How parents can help their VCE students’. There is much within which I feel all parents will find helpful, and I refer to some advice from Andrew that I am sure all families will find valuable.

“Parents have a vital role in helping students:

  • manage time
  • manage energy
  • manage stress
  • manage to get everything in at the right time and in the right place.

In addition to this you have to manage yourself.

and…

Sit down with your teenager and map out an ideal week, including:

  • times for sleeping (at least eight hours a night)
  • times for unwinding and relaxing
  • best breakfast foods
  • the best times for study
  • the best time of the week for consolidating notes and extending memory
  • time to catch up with friends
  • required school hours
  • time for part-time work (less than 10 hours a week)
  • how to handle invitations around exam times.”

I recommend The Parents Website, you may be an occasional visitor and browse the resources, or you may wish to subscribe to their regular newsletter.
