Pat Cronin 2025

As part of the Year 12 Wellbeing Program, students have been exploring the Respectful Relationships curriculum.

Participating in the Respectful Relationships curriculum at Year 12 is an important step in building empathy, understanding and accountability, and preparing students for life beyond school. On Friday 16 May, we had the honour of welcoming a speaker from the Pat Cronin Foundation, who shared Pat’s story with great courage and compassion.

The Pat Cronin Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to ending the senseless violence that devastates families and communities. Established in memory of Pat Cronin, a young man who tragically lost his life to a coward punch, the foundation delivers education and awareness programs that promote empathy, resilience and non-violence.

Through school incursions, community outreach, and powerful storytelling, the foundation empowers young people to make safe and respectful choices. It was a powerful and emotional experience not only a reflection on the devastating impact of a senseless act of violence, but also an explanation of the importance of bystanders and subsequent call to action. A call to consider the consequences of our choices, to treat one another with kindness and respect, looking out for one another, and to play an active role in creating a safer, more caring society.

Here are some reflections from our Year 12 students:

The Pat Cronin incursion was an insightful yet heartbreaking experience. It explained through story, the difference between anger and aggression, and reminded us to be responsible when drinking and when in situations where something feels off. It was a valuable lesson to be learnt and is something I will never forget when I’m out with my own friends.

One of the most moving moments was witnessing the deep impact Pat Cronin's death had on loved ones their grief was heartbreaking and a powerful reminder of how one wrong choice can change many lives. The presenter's honest, inspiring story of growing up around violence himself, and choosing a different path, made the message even more meaningful.

After the session, I came away with a deep appreciation for organisations like the Pat Cronin Foundation, sharing powerful, life-saving messages with students. People like Aidan (the presenter), who bravely open up about their experiences with senseless violence, truly embody the heart of the foundation’s mission.

The incursion was eye-opening, showing how anyone can be affected by violence not just aggressors. It also taught us valuable ways to manage anger in ourselves and others, which is important as we move into adulthood.
