Last Friday the Year 4 and 5 students collaborated to create a Mini Olympics for the Prep and Year 1 students at our Kalkallo campus.
One member of each Year 4 and 5 class formed a team of 3 students. Each team had to represent a country of their choice and devise an Olympic event suitable for Prep and Year 1 students. The teams were expected to create several flags to represent their country and make medals for the Prep and Year 1 participants.
Each student had a role to play during the event including settling the students, explaining the activity, modelling the activity, coaching students and making it fun and inclusive. One of the teams organised an opening ceremony which included all the teams marching with their chosen country flag, the Year 3 choir singing the national anthem (ably supported by Ms R Smith) and torch bearers ceremonially leading the countries. A logistics team organised the layout for the activities, how long each activity would last and made sure all the groups moved cohesively during the games.
There were 25 countries represented and 25 Olympic activities were successfully organised. At the end of the activities the teams awarded medals to all the participants. The Preps and Year 1s absolutely loved it. The Year 4s and 5s learned a great deal about collaboration, working to a deadline, and working with young children.
