In this edition of Meet the Team, we are pleased to introduce Sam Butterfield, Acting Deputy Principal.
Sam joined Hume Anglican Grammar in 2023 as Director of Teaching and Learning. This semester, Sam has stepped into the role of Acting Deputy Principal while Penelope Monger is one leave. Prior to Hume, Sam held a range of leadership positions in schools in East Melbourne, London and the North of England. Sam also co-founded an international teacher training company, which allowed him the privilege of travelling extensively and exploring a range of educational cultures.
Sam moved to Australia in 2021 and is excited about gaining his citizenship this year.
What do you like most about working at Hume Anglican Grammar?
The School has a beautiful culture. Both students and staff are warm, compassionate and passionate about learning.
Can you tell us about a project you are currently working on?
A project that I’ve really enjoyed is assisting with the creation and implementation of our Annual Reflection and Development. All staff at the School work through a structured reflection on the year, their growth, and their goals for the future with a member of leadership. I’m passionate about this because I believe that honest reflection is deeply powerful and models the lifelong learning we instil in our students.
Who has had the biggest impact on your career and why?
This is the third school where I have been a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Each of the three Principals has been extremely generous in their support and guidance. I’ve learnt a huge amount from each of them!
Fast Four
If your friends could describe you in one word, what would it be?
Kind.
If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
The Obamas.
What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
I’ve realised I am both shy and an extrovert.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I would love to be fluent in every language. Language connects us deeply.
