Sam Butterfield at The Age Summit 2

On Wednesday 11 June, our Director of Teaching and Learning, Sam Butterfield, was invited to The Age Schools Summit to present as part of a panel of school leaders on the topic of school improvement.

The Age Schools Summit is a major educational event each year where politicians, school leaders from all sectors and educational researchers meet, debate and learn together. This year’s focus was on research findings and the future direction of Australian schools, in particular unpacking the move towards increased explicit and responsive teaching in Government schools and how this direction would be implemented.

As part of the panel, Sam shared some of the successes of the School as we strive to continuously improve. The panel discussed sustainable school improvement, collaborative approaches that deeply understand the context of a school, the short and long-term metrics that help leaders to track and ensure success and positive responses to the current educational climate, as well as taking questions from the floor.

Of the experience, Sam says that he found the panel discussion extremely affirming of the Vision for Teaching and Learning, with a number of schools and research organisations following up with individual questions and seeking guidance for their own projects. A session that was particularly useful was the Gratton Institutes research into the most effective numeracy approaches in Primary, which is something we consistently review the evidence in.

It was a privilege to share the continued success of Hume Anglican Grammar with the wider educational community, and to be a part of such considered discussion.
