At the beginning of the school year, it is important to educate students about how to be safe online when they use digital devices.

Students use the internet in almost every aspect of their lives, so it’s important for all students to know about online risk, how to be safe online and where to go for help.

Tuesday, 6 February 2024 was Safer Internet Day, a global initiative to raise awareness of online safety issues. During Safer Internet Day, students were encouraged to take three simple actions when approaching online safety: Connect. Reflect. Protect.

Connect safely by keeping apps and devices secure and reviewing their privacy settings regularly.

Reflect on how their actions online may affect others or your safety.

Protect themselves and others by visiting eSafety.gov.au to find out how to stay safe online and report online abuse.

Cyber Safety at Hume
At Hume Anglican Grammar, cyber safety is a core component of our Wellbeing Curriculum from Prep to Year 12. Students at each year level are taught a component of cyber safety based on their access to technology and developmental needs. Our curriculum is linked to the Australian Curriculum and the Hume Anglican Grammar Vision for Student Wellbeing, which focuses on creating a positive school culture and respectful community, where all members of our School feel valued, accepted, and safe.

The Student Wellbeing Curriculum is available on Canvas for parents to access Prep to Year 12. I encourage parents to see what their child is learning.

Hume Anglican Grammar is proud of our partnerships with the Cyber Safety Project, eSmart and Think You Know across all three campuses.

Resources for parents
The eSafety Commissioner has an excellent parent site that has webinars, downloadable resources, and conversation guides. We have a couple of recommendations to get you started if you are learning how to keep your child safe online and how to manage their devices.
